“Corrode Silo” (2020)
from About Men

“I wrote "Corrode Silo" as an ode and goodbye to my father, who died in 2017 on a day of his choosing. Most of the song is written from his perspective on his death bed; what he sees, what he feels, what he longs for. I wanted to cement that day into a song because grief has a way of taking away the concrete. I was hoping a song would make my experience real; a song to "corrode the silos" separating him from me, separating me from the death. But at the end of the song, I cannot imagine his death so I write from my own perspective instead: "It breaks me down completely / oh, but sort of sweetly / when I recognize / it's only the last time / I'll love you / physically." Life goes on another way.
